Story Behind the Art
This sculpture is hand-carved by members of SMOLArt, an artisan cooperative based in Tabaka, Kenya—the heart of soapstone crafts. The name SMOLArt represents the diversity of artisans creating small, medium, and large soapstone pieces. Established in 1990, this WFTO-certified Fair Trade organization ensures artisans receive fair wages while also investing in their community through projects that improve education, healthcare, and living conditions.
The soapstone is sourced from quarries in the Kiisi region of Kenya, where artisans extract the stone using hand tools such as machetes and pangas. After shaping the sculpture, artisans meticulously sand and polish each piece by hand, revealing the stone’s natural beauty. This sustainable craft provides artisans with economic opportunities while preserving an age-old tradition of African stone carving.

This sculpture is perfect for family-oriented celebrations, including Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, weddings, anniversaries, and housewarmings. A meaningful piece that embodies the strength, love, and connection of family bonds.
